According to a Delhi Government survey, the unemployment rate in Delhi rose sharply from 11.1% in January-February 2020 to 28.5% in October-November 2020. This is almost a 17.4% increase. Moreover, the incomes also reduced drastically during the pandemic from ₹16,511 to ₹15,383.
Besides, the survey also showed that the unemployment rate increased more in women than men. While it rose from 8.7% to 23.3% in men, unemployment sharply increased from 25.6% to 54.7% among women.
Delhi's Finance Minister Manish Sisodia expressed that the pandemic has taken its toll on the livelihoods of the people. 'Many people have lost their jobs, businesses and it is our duty to formulate social security and welfare schemes.' stated Sisodia.
The survey was conducted with a sample size of 44,226 individuals from 11 revenue districts in Delhi. This survey gives a full picture to the government to draft its policies in addressing the consequences of job loss in various industries and sectors.
