Pedestrian crossing in the city has been quite a dangerous event in daily life as the number of innocent people dying on the zebra crossing has been. The percentage of people that die in road accidents just on the crossing is an unavoidable 23%. The Hyderabad Police sees this statistic as alarming and is trying to reduce this number through new initiatives.
The year 2021 has seen a shocking number of 39 innocent people lose their lives to road accidents at the zebra crossing. The sad fact is that these people were not involved in traffic violations but died due to the negligence of those who were reckless on the road. The number in just seven months of 2021 was more than the total number in 2020. Police have teamed up with various agencies to kickstart campaigns that will help the cause.
GHMC and the traffic police will work closely to fix the zebra crossing and ensure pedestrian crossings are pretty evident and traffic islands are set up correctly. Also, GHMC will set up multiple foot-over bridges missing at the significant junctions as soon as possible. The local traffic police officials will guide ACP's to monitor the accident spots at or near pedestrian crossings, and necessary works will be undertaken.
Social media is the biggest tool for law enforcement as campaigns will educate people about the importance of road safety, and even children will be taught about it through virtual events and programs. However, in the current scenario where children and teenagers are at home, the risk of such accidents during peak college and school timings stands less. On the other hand, the traffic police will ensure a strict penalty on reckless drivers who are the root causes of innocent deaths.
