As part of the property tax collection in the GHMC area, many cheques given by defaulters are getting bounced. Some property owners give post-dated cheques and do not maintain funds in their accounts. As many as 1,500 to 2,000 property owners' cheques bounced in 30 circles in Greater. These cheques range from Rs 50,000 to over Rs 5 lakh.
Previously, there used to be no action in such cases. But the authorities are now ready to take legal action against them. Notices are issued first and then the concerned property owners will have to face cases in court. It is learned that the decision was taken to collect the tax as the corporation has to rely on the property tax collection itself to pay the salaries of the employees.
Superiors are putting pressure on lower-level staff to collect property tax anyway. It also warns of action if the tax is not collected. Memos have already been issued to several employees in Circles 15 and 16. Some employees are lamenting that what they can do if people do not pay taxes. With the first of February coming up, the corporation is not in a situation to pay salaries on time. The authorities are seizing the properties of defaulters. More than 500 properties have already been seized in the Greater Range.
