Yes, it’s that time of the year that almost all Hyderabadis look forward to and the reason is simple. It is Haleem time and various eateries and restaurants in the city are gearing up to serve the dish that is a culinary delight. Ramzan is the time of fasting and breaking fast and the rituals followed are the same everywhere. But in Hyderabad, the days preceding Ramzan are a good time to meet up with friends and family over haleem.
The protein-rich lentils, meat, wheat, pure ghee, spices make it a wholesome dish for those breaking fast.Last year, due to the pandemic, the eateries were out of business and Hyderabadis lost a year to have their favorite food. This year, both makers and eaters are clear that they will have their fill, lest the government imposes strict norms or even lockdown due to the second surge of COVID cases.
Restaurants like Cafe 555 in Masab Tank, Zafrani Haleem in the old city, Hotel Arbab in Toli Chowki have already started serving haleem this year. They are among the eateries that want to make up for the losses of last year. They will continue till May 20 they say. Each year, restaurants start serving haleem from Shab-e-Barat (night of forgiving) and continue to a few days past Ramzan.Cafes like Cafe 555 have made it mandatory for people to wear masks while coming and going out of the restaurant. No mask, no haleem they say as the state government has made masks mandatory.Haleem is sought after as the various ingredients in it boost immunity and it is protein-rich.
