A rule can cause issues to different people on different accounts. The newly implemented challan system of penalising the pillion riders for not wearing helmets is causing huge problems to taxi riders who ride bikes for rentals such as Rapido, Ola and Uber.
While the bike aggregators did issue notifications to bike captains to make sure that pillion riders wear helmets, in quintessential Hyderabadi style, the pillion riders are coming up with various reasons to make sure that they ride without a helmet. And this is causing trouble for bike captains or bike drivers as the challans are issued on their names.
First and foremost is the resurgence in the cases of corona. Not many are happy wearing helmets worn by others as they fear spread of virus. They are questioning the bike captains as to who will bear the charges of treatment if they catch the virus. While that’s one cause, another reason is that many pillion riders are more comfortable not wearing a helmet due to the heat that has already started due to summer in the city. Since many sweat in their helmets, the next rider is not willing to put on the same helmet as it is smelly and sticky.
However, on the flip side, the drivers are having a tough time due to their reluctance and new challan system. Having been charged for pillion riders’ reluctance, they complain that it is not fair on them. Who will pay for the challans is their query. They are charged about Rs 150 per case and the drivers are surely not happy. Also, high fuel rates and cancellation by riders on being asked to wear the helmets are other pain points for drivers.
Howeveran officer on condition of anonymity shares that the bike aggregators can approach the concerned police department to sort out the issue.
