The State Government has brought in the 20-kilolitre free drinking water scheme to tenants in the GHMC limits. The property owners were asked to install water meters and also link their Aadhar to CAN (Customer Account Number) to avail of this scheme. About 95 percent of connections, excluding commercial and others within GHMC limits, will benefit under the scheme.
But then, there are about 30 lakh houses in the city of which 47 percent are occupied by owners. So, there is ambiguity about the scheme being applicable to tenants. After a review meeting, the Government has decided to extend the scheme for tenants as well. Tenants residing in the house can now upload their Aadhaar details along with the property tax details of the owner.
On the other side, there is no clarity yet about how the scheme will be extended to those residing in apartments. The government and the water board are yet to announce norms to such consumers depriving them of the scheme benefits. As of now, the water board has seeded only 1.61 lakh connections with Aadhaar numbers out of a total of 9.84 lakh households in the city.
