Leading Medical Expert Dr. Kakarla Subbarao, the Former Director of Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, has passed away. Kakarla who was admitted to KIMS Hospital a few days ago due to age-related illness, passed away on Friday morning while receiving treatment. He is 94 years old.
Born in 1925 in Peddamuttevi, Krishna district to a farming family, Kakarla Subbarao was educated in Challapalli as a child. After completing his college education at Machilipatnam Hindu College, he received his doctorate from Visakhapatnam Andhra Medical College. Kakarla, who became a house surgeon in 1951, later went to the United States for higher education with a special stipend. He passed the American Board of Radiology exams in 1955.
Kakarla worked in various hospitals in New York and Baltimore from 1954 to 1956. Returning home in 1956, he joined Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad as an Assistant Professor. He was later promoted to Chief Radiologist at Osmania College. Returning to the United States in 1970, Kakarla Subbarao graduated from the United Kingdom with a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiology. Since then he has worked in many hospitals in America.
In 1986, the then Chief Minister NT Ramarao called the NRIs to come back and serve their motherland. Inspired by the call, Kakarla, who returned home took on key responsibilities in Hyderabad NIMS. Kakarla Subbarao developed all the divisions in Nims. The hospital was then upgraded to the level of a private, corporate hospital.
Dr. Kakarla, who has authored numerous books and research papers on radiology, has given medical lectures abroad. In his 50 years of experience in radiology, he has received numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000 by the Central Government for his services to medicine and humanity.
