Amsterdam is the cycling capital of the world as its people commute more on bicycles. In fact, there are more bicycles than its population in this city of canals. 'Bycs' is a social enterprise from the Netherlands' capital and it chose the city-based Santhana Selvan as the Bicycle Mayor of Hyderabad.
Selvan is an IT professional and a cycling enthusiast too. His duty as Bicycle Mayor is to encourage and spread awareness to promote cycling culture in the city. And he has to interact with several organisations including government and non-government bodies as well to encourage people towards cycling.
Santhanu developed an interest in cycling at a very young age in Chennai. He used to wake up early in the morning at 4:45 am only to just go for a bicycle ride with a group. In the process, he became a core member of this group and eventually, he started commuting on a bicycle for everything and everywhere.
Meanwhile, he had to shift to Hyderabad. Here, he observed that only fitness enthusiasts do cycling. So, he decided to change the mindset of the people with the support of other organisations.
'GHMC has already set up two-cycle rental centres in the city but the facility should be expanded to more areas. My plan is to encourage Hyderabadis to commute on cycles for 50% of their needs by 2030.' said Selvan.
