The Hijra Community is one of the most adversely affected communities due to Coronavirus, as their livelihood has been affected due to the pandemic. They're often ignored by other people of the society and rely on either begging or sex work for a livelihood. Once again, this community is now suffering during the second wave due to the lack of proper income to even go about their daily lives.
Street Cause, a city-based student organisation, is now helping out the Hijra Community by donating over dry groceries to over 1,100 members of the Hijra community. Last year, Street Caused helped out the Hijra Community, but this time, they have made sure that the essentials they have now donated will cover each of the 1,100 members they have helped out, every day, for a month and a half.
Over 11 Lakhs were raised for this initiative. The donation includes grocery packets comprising 10 kg of rice, dal, sugar, pickle, spices, oil, coffee powder, soap, toothpaste and other such essentials at the cost of Rs 1,000 per kit. This donation drive included handing out these grocery kits to those living around Uppal, Mallapur, Saroornagar, Moosapet and IDPL.
