The Telangana Government is lucky to use the services of the Begumpet Airport during the pandemic, even after its total closure for civil aviation in 2008. The RGIA Airport at Shamshabad is more extensive and more organized. Still, the Begumpet airport located in the heart of the twin cities is cutting the transportation time of oxygen cylinders and other covid resources.
The current scenario is seeing supplies from across the country transported in cargo planes, IAF planes and other standard supplies carrying flights have made Begumpet airport their mainstream landing location. The IAF planes are used to bring oxygen to the city and state from Odisha. The airport doesn't have an extensive staff, but few people from the Airports Authority of India are mainly handling the ground duty and checking everything that comes in. Also, this airport is heavily guarded, and not even media is permitted to look at the airport's functioning 13 years since closure.
This airport is seeing a flurry of air ambulances arriving to seek treatment for their highly critical condition. Their condition makes it impossible to travel a good 30km from RGIA, Shamshabad, to enter the city to seek the needful treatment, making Begumpet an ideal landing location. This airport has been lending this support to help the state save lots of time ever since the pandemic began in March 2020. Also, this airbase was a private landing point for politicians and VIP's who had to make quick trips, especially to the national capital in the past year.
