With the announcement of lockdown, people poured on to the roads for stocking up on last-minute requirements and shopping for the upcoming EID in Charminar. Till Tuesday evening and even during the wee hours of Wednesday when there was 4-hour relaxation, the old city was full of people shopping for upcoming Eid and also to buy essentials.
However, after 10 AM, all of the old city has gone silent with completely vacant roads. No shops, no vendors, no activity. Barring the police personnel on duty and one odd people going around on scooters, there is no one to be seen.
The police have laid out strict instructions to avoid gatherings and are enquiring about people seen on roads. While people with valid reasons are being allowed to go through, ambulances and vehicles carrying goods are being allowed to move around. Medical shops are open, though.
Social media has pictures of the deserted roads around Charminar, and many are sharing these with friends and relatives in and outside Hyderabad.
Meanwhile, there are also pictures on social media of people rushing to shops and picking up stuff between 6 AM and 10 AM when the lockdown is relaxed state-wide.
It will be a silent run-up to Ramzan this year.
