The latest scare among COVID-19 infected patients is the black fungus. The fungus develops among few virus-infected patients through the air. Since cell immunity is compromised by the COVID-19 virus, it takes a while for the patients to understand the severity of the problem.
In fact, this new development has left ENT and eye doctors baffled, and at least two in five cases of black fungus or mucormycosis are being reported on a daily basis. Another major problem is the non-availability of proper medicines to cure this condition.
Nearly 50 to 150 patients have been infected by this fungus. Cases where the fungus entered through the nose and spread to the eye, and eventually went up to the brain, are being reported causing panic among patients and their kith and kin.
For starters, there is pain and bleeding in the nose and sinusitis is the first indication in COVID-19 recovered patients. This is the clue that invasive fungal is spreading in their body. Mucormycosis is seen in five stages: stage 1 nose, stage 2 jawbone, stage 3 eyes, stage 4 brain and stage 5 is lungs. While the other stages can be salvaged, the last stage needs high-end intervention to survive. However, black fungus is being seen in patients who were given steroids and among those who weren’t given steroids.
The doctors are pleading with the government to procure medicines and supply to them. When the fungus invades the brain, then neurosurgeons, eye and ENT doctors are required for treating the patient.
