Annapurna canteens which are run by the state government in Greater Hyderabad, have started serving free meals from Tuesday.
Arvind Kumar, secretary, the municipal administration, has informed that the orders came from minister KTR, and the canteens will serve free food till further orders. Hygienic and hot food is being provided at all 250 Annapurna canteens in the GHMC limits.
Patient attendees, daily wage workers, hawkers, people from shelter homes are among those benefiting from this new directive. The meals, made up of 400 gm of rice, sambar, vegetable curry, and pickle, were given to over 45,000 people on the first day itself.
One of the most extensive free public feeding programmes in India, the scheme run by GHMC served around five crore meals across Telangana during the lockdown last year, winning praise from even UNESCO.
