The biggest Sputnik V import consignment so far of 56.6 tonnes of vaccines has arrived from Russia. The consignment arrived by a special freighter at Hyderabad Airport early on Tuesday morning. GMR Hyderabad Air Cargo processed and delivered the single largest import shipment in just 90 minutes.
The consignment must be kept at -20° C in 90 minutes. So, it is cleared at a super speed. Sources say that there are about three million doses in the consignment. Apollo Hospitals have already partnered with Dr Reddys - the Indian partner of Sputnik V, to administer the vaccine. The hospitals are planning to administer the vaccine from the second week of June at an estimated price of Rs 1195 per dose.
Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) already sent 1.5 Million doses of the vaccine, and with this new consignment, the number has gone up to 4.5 million doses. Sputnik V is the third vaccine to get emergency use approval in India. Dr Reddy'sReddy's announced a soft launch of the vaccine in India on May 14, with a limited pilot after administering the vaccine to its employees. The later consignment will be approved after testing at the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) at Kasauli. Meanwhile, Dr Reddy's is also working to kickstart the local manufacturing of the vaccine, ensuring better availability at a lower price.
