The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Cyberabad police are eyeing the hotels around Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad as these hotels are being used as transit hubs for drug trafficking and gold smuggling. The mules stay in these hotels and use them to send the packages received from the airport and forward them to onward destinations.
They opt for these hotels closer to the airport because it is not safe to travel longer carrying the packages. RGIA police and the DRI have put these hotels under their surveillance. The hotels are mandated to take the details from all the foreigners and uploads them to the FRRO website for registration.
Police scrutinize the details and take action if necessary. Sometimes they even do visit the hotels and check the guest registers. Recently on June 5th, DRI seized a huge consignment of 12 kg of heroin worth Rs 78 crore and two women passengers from Uganda and Zambia were the mules. One of the mules, the woman from Uganda stayed in a Shamshabad hotel and got arrested in the airport when she came to collect her missing baggage at RGIA.
