In Hyderabad, A newborn baby got a new lease of life who was suffering from a disease called transposition of great arteries. Dr. Tapan K Dash, along with his team of doctors, performed a complex open-heart surgery on the 16-day-old baby who traveled all the way from a village in Odisha to Hyderabad for the operation.
The experts say that the transposition of the great arteries is a birth defect of the heart in which the two main arteries carrying blood out of the heart are transposed, which means switched in position. According to senior cardiologist Prashant Patil, the blue blood coming to the baby's heart was going back to the body in this condition because of the reversal of heart structures.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Dash in four hours. Dash stated that they not only had to connect the heart to the original structures but also to the whole body. The one origin of the artery supplying blood to the heart added to the complexity of the procedure. This made it impossible for the baby to survive without surgery.
The baby's condition is said to be stable now.
