Over 200 new liquor shops are likely to be given permission soon by the Telangana Excise Department. The reports suggest that the Excise Department officials opine that this will increase the state government’s revenue. Moreover, in October, the existing licenses for liquor shops will expire. The reports also say that the Excise officials are on the hunt for appropriate places to allocate new wine shops. During the current financial year, the Excise revenue has been over Rs 9,000 crores. This huge revenue is generated by 2,220 liquor shops running across the state.
According to the officials, the two-year license policy for the existing shops will be ending by October this year. Excise officials have asked staffers to identify places in newly-formed districts and Mandal headquarters for new shops to enhance revenue.
The officials also added that they would set up more liquor shops in new places to generate revenue and to facilitate better services, and prevent belt shops. The Excise Department issues permissions for liquor shops once every two years. As a deposit, the applicants have to pay Rs 2 lakh.
