The city is facing a new problem in terms of public transportation. Thanks to flyovers and the Metro, many bus stops in the city have been disappearing slowly and steadily causing concern among commuters.
In the past, there were around 2550 bus stops in about 1050 routes. However, on the other hand, there has been a steady rise in the number of colonies and this has led to increase in commuters needing public transportation. It has been noticed that around 850 bus stops have been removed in the past couple of years. On the other hand, at some places, the drivers are not stopping the buses despite the presence of shelters.
For example, there were around six stops between VST and Indira Park. Then there were routes between Uppal and Mehdipatnam, Jiaguda; one between Dilsukh Nagar and Secunderabad and another between Secunderabad and Koti. However, due to flyover work on these routes, there is no set routine for buses on these routes. Also, in many places, there are no bus stops any more.So is the case with Lakdi-ka-pul, which happens to be one of the biggest bus stops in the city.
There was a time when buses used to ply from here. However, due to Metro work, the bus stops have been removed. It’s the same with Masab Tank, Vijaya Nagar Colony and NMDC.There are many other localities within the city and around city where the bus services have been affected. In fact, 5000 trips to villages around the city have also been canceled in the past few days. Some time back, 3850 buses would make at least 42,000 trips in a day. Now the number of buses has been reduced to 2700 and at least 10,000 trips have been slashed.
