The Shamirpet Sports School in the suburbs of Hyderabad will have an urban forest very soon thanks to the hard work and determination of an officer. He is on a mission to cultivate one lakh plants and e brought new beauty to hundred acres of land that has been idle for many years.
Harikrishna took over as Telangana Sports School OSD a year ago. With the availability of large-scale space in the school, he decided to grow plants. He made 100 acres of land available for plant cultivation. HMDA and forest officials took part in this. With collective efforts, over one lakh plants were planted during the year, and steps were taken to take care of them.
A nursery has been set up within the sports school to grow plants on 100 acres. 25 lakh different types of plants were readied under the auspices of HMDA FRVO Manjula. About 90 percent of the plants survived as quality plants were used. The nursery established here also provides plants to various areas under HMDA.
The one hundred acres of land is not limited to just shade and oxygen-giving plants. Fruit plants and flowering plants are also planted with the intention of providing nutrition to the students. Tens of thousands of fruit plants like guava, pomegranate, mango, tamarind, almond, pineapple, mulberry, custard apple, etc. are planted in two installments. Colorful flowering plants were also planted. In a short period of time, 100 acres out of the 200 acres of the sports school will be turned into a dense forest.
