Smartphones have been parents' enemies as they mislead their children into a different world they either don't belong to or are too young to be a part of. Unfortunately, there have been many cases where the parent's protectiveness turned out to be reversal as children either run away from the family or resort to self-harm and suicide.
The case of a class VII girl living at Hafeezpet, Miyapur, and daughter of two daily laborers is quite shocking as she took the whole caution and advice of her father to keep a smartphone only for studying. Instead, she set herself ablaze in the absence of her parents and older siblings. The girl was a residential school student at Keesara but took classes from home due to the pandemic. \
The girl given the smartphone for her studies would get engaged post-study time in interacting with her relatives and friends. Her father warned against constant interaction with relatives, especially with a male relative who is way too old to be having a conversation like youngsters day in and out, and tried fixing this problem by changing the sim and taking away her phone for a while.
The father warned everyone at home to maintain caution and keep checking on her mobile activity whenever they can and also decided to stop talking to her for a while to make her understand the depth of the problem. However, seeing this as a real problem and disagreeing with her father's advice, the girl set herself ablaze with kerosene in the absence of her family members. The girl aged 13 was immediately rushed to Osmania General Hospital, where she died while being treated.
