On the lines of the Delhi government, the Telangana government has brought in the concept of Basti Dawakhanas to provide better medical care to the poor living in the slums of the state capital city of Hyderabad. As part of these efforts, Basti Dawakhanas are being set up in several bastis in the city to provide medical treatment.
There are currently 226 Basti dispensaries available within the GHMC. In addition, the authorities are taking steps to set up another 32 Basti dispensaries. With the new ones, the number of Basti Dawakhanas will reach 258. GHMC has decided to set up a total of 300 Basti Dawakhanas and is hoping to reach the target early next year.
But then, there is a criticism that the corporation is only focused on establishing the Dawakhanas while ignoring the appointment of doctors and proper facilities in them. There is a severe shortage of medicines in many Basti Dawakhanas and staff there redirects the patients to the nearest health centers. "GHMC should focus on bettering the facilities in existing ones instead of going for namesake expansion," Pradeep Gupta, a resident of Serlingampally tells Nearby News. There are fourteen Basti Dawakhanas in Serlingampally and most of them do not have doctors available.
