The city's war against drugs is surely seeing the police and excise duty officials go the extra mile by stepping up as vigilantes and making raids at the right time, and seizing drugs from individuals, which is quite a good thing. A similar level of effort would help the state win against drugs.
But in the law enforcements' effort to question and check suspicious people, they have been taking inspiration from the NCB, who has been taping and checking phones of celebrities and detaining them based on texts which talk about drugs or anything related is being done by the city police since the past two days as well. Video grabs show that people at multiple checkpoints in the old city, apart from being frisked, are also asked to unlock their phones and are forced to read out chats or read by police on the lookout for the keywords like ganja, maal, OCB, stuff, scoring, pot.
The whole idea is flawed, and law enforcement is invading people's privacy. Many people have taken to Twitter to express their rage and explained how Whatsapp and Instagram GIFS talk about weed or drugs and usage of those stickers or discussing drugs doesn't make them a suspect and that the police are wasting their time.
The NCB in the state, the police, and the excise duty officials should pay a little bit more eye to detail and make few stops at houses of the rich and famous, which could help them get the better in this war instead of invading ordinary people's phones and detaining them for finding words related to drugs.
