Hyderabad
Sankranthi is a prominent festival of Telugu people. The city has created a new history with this festival which is celebrated for three days as Bhogi, Sankranti, and Kanuma. It is learned that Bhagyanagar residents bought 60 lakh kgs of chicken in just three days from Bhogi festival Friday to Kanuma festival Sunday. With the price of mutton being higher than the chicken cost, people have shown interest in buying chicken meat.
In Hyderabad, a kilo of mutton costs between Rs 850 and Rs 900. The same chicken month but only Rs 240 per kg. With this, people have shown more interest in buying chicken. On normal days, 10 lakh kg of chicken is sold daily in Greater Hyderabad. However, in the wake of the Sankranthi festival, a large number of people went to their native places.
Even then, during the Sankranthi festival, about 30 lakh kg of chicken was sold on Fridays and Saturdays. Kanuma which also happens to be a Sunday witnessed a whopping 30 lakh kgs of chicken sold in a single day. Mutton sales, on the other hand, are also more than the daily sales. While 2 lakh kg of mutton is being sold on normal days, the residents of Bhagyanagar bought 5 lakh kg of mutton on Sunday. Traders say 10 to 15 lakh kg of mutton was sold during the three days of the festival.
