The pendency of cyber Crime cases in the courts is increasing across the country along with the crimes. Until last year 88% of cases were pending. There was pendency of 78% of cases in 2020 and 76% in 2019. The Union Home Ministry has released the pendency statistics of cyber crime cases. Courts have handed down sentences only in 25% of cases last year.
However, the percentage of convictions is increasing every year. In 2018, the lowest number of convictions was in 6% of cases. In 2019 and 2020, the courts imposed penalties at the rate of 10% of cases. While Uttar Pradesh ranks first in the country in the sentencing of cyber crime cases, Telangana ranks second.
In 2020, 5,024 cyber crime cases were registered in Telangana. Police arrested 1,169 accused in the respective cases. In 939 cases, the investigating officers filed charges against 1,158 people in the courts and 282 were convicted. In Uttar Pradesh, courts have convicted 878 accused. It is noteworthy that not a single accused in the cyber crime cases in Telangana was sentenced in 2018. In 2019, only 11 people were convicted.
