Police have stopped using body cameras that were made available seven years before as part of People-friendly Policing. They are not used for patrolling as well as traffic enforcement. All the cameras are mostly dysfunctional due to a lack of maintenance and staff negligence.
On August 14, 2015, the then CP Mahender Reddy launched Body-worn cameras for the first time at the City Commissionerate office in Basheerbagh. More than 150 cameras were provided to traffic and law and order police in the three commissionerates in Greater Hyderabad. Initially, these cameras gave good results.
Police behavior with the public is recorded on the spot in public places. Supervisors used to take action by looking at the video footage. The footage also used to come in handy when violators misbehave with the police during Drunk and Drive and other offenses. But now senior officials in many cases do not find immediate evidence in tracing staff who misbehave with the public and vice-versa.
