In 2020 and 2021, the city witnessed alarming rains, and due to this, the water level went up to eight meters. However, it has now been observed that the levels are depleting drastically. Also, with summer having started already, this is bad news for citizens of Hyderabad and neighboring Ranga Reddy districts.
Already, residential welfare associations are worried over the depleting levels due to defunct rainwater pits. And the latest reports are spreading panic. Meanwhile, the GWD stated that the ground levels usually start depleting in March and will see an increase only during the monsoon season. Another reason for the sudden fall in levels is all the construction activity that has picked up following a lull. The Ground Water Department points out that it surely is one of the reasons.
A report released by GWD shows a fall of 1.56 meters in February 2022 in comparison with February 2021 and January 2022. GWD has 69 piezometer monitoring stations under GHMC. However, the GHMC released another report that said that there was 724 mm excess rainfall during 2021-22.
With loads of hi-rise buildings mushrooming all over the city, people are already worried about water woes during the summer season, and the situation looks scary for now.
