There is a poor response from the people to the traffic challan clearance scheme in Telangana. From March 1 to 15, pending challans of Rs 140 crore were cleared. The discount offers made by the police is not getting response as much as the department expected. Motorists have cleared fines of Rs 140 crore in the form of challans over a period of 15 days.
More than 80 percent of the paid challans are motorists from Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates. The offer will run until March 31st across the state. Motorists have been clearing 1000 challans per minute since the offer started. Fines of Rs 5.5 crore were paid on the first day.
The total amount that needs to be paid is a whopping 1,750 Crore for over 6 Crore pending challans. The department expected revenue of at least 500 Crore (discounted amount) from the scheme but midway through the month, half of the target is also not reached. The department is expecting more people to pay their pending challans in the second half of March. The lack of awareness in the district is also said to be the reason.
Many do not even know how to check challans and some even do not know their vehicles have pending challans. The department is considering the extension of the scheme if necessary. The department hopes that more than 75% of the pending challans would be liquidated by the end of March.
