Hyderabad
Just a few days back, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) completed the rejuvenation work at Langar Houz lake. Now, they have cleaned the historic Katora Houz in the Khairatabad zone.
If one goes into history, Katora Houz was built in the 16th century by Qutub Shahi rulers as a freshwater storage tank. However, over the years, it was totally neglected and turned into an eyesore with water hyacinth and garbage. The civic body sent a team of 18 people equipped with the required machinery, and they managed to fish out all the garbage and water hyacinth using an earthmover.
The hyacinth will be transported to the Jawahar Nagar dump once it dries, and the officials say now the mosquito problem will also be in control. Anti larval operations were also taken up. Though the lake was cleaned in 2021, the water hyacinth spread out again, covering the entire lake and the civic body had to take up cleaning activity again. It had led to severe mosquito problems in the area, and the cleaning has now freed the area of mosquitoes.
Meanwhile, the officials share that Shah Hatim Talab, another Qutb Shahi times water body located in Khairatabad, is also being cleaned at present. The water hyacinth is being removed here using a floating trash collector.
