GHMC is not paying much attention to the regular inspections of hotels, restaurants, and street food centers in the city. Food safety officials are doing checks only when customers complain. Daily 15 to 20 complaints are received by food inspectors via My GHMC app, helpline number, Dial 100, Twitter about hotels, restaurants serving poor quality food.
There are over 280 such complaints in just three months. Food inspectors are rushing to the area where the complaints are coming from, taking samples and keeping them away. There is no focus on conducting random raids across the City. There are currently 21 officers in the GHMC Food Safety Wing but the situation has not changed.
Some hoteliers, who have low sales heat leftover food overnight and send it the next day for online orders. With the summer season now approaching, food is likely to spoil quickly. The price of a liter of sunflower oil has now crossed Rs 250 due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a result, the eateries seem to be using substandard oils. Up to 90 percent of street food centers are using substandard oils. GHMC's food safety department's response is not up to the mark, consumers say.
