Hyderabad
From the 29th of this month (Tuesday), passengers in cabs belonging to app-based companies will have to pay an additional Rs 50 if they want AC. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union has launched a 'No AC' program to protest the non-increase in commission paid to the drivers by the app companies despite the huge increase in petrol and diesel prices.
In the wake of this, some drivers in the city are stopping the AC during rides. If you want AC, you will have to pay an additional Rs 25 to Rs 50 for up to 25 km. Some drivers are asking to pay Rs 100 for a journey of 25-50 km. Petrol and diesel prices have risen sharply in the last two years. In line with this, taxi drivers say that Ola and Uber have not increased the base fair for drivers and are still enforcing the prices set two years ago.
At present, the base fare per ride is around Rs 12-13 and they want to get paid between Rs 24 and Rs 25 as per the increased fuel prices. They are making it clear that they are ready to provide AC facility to the passengers if the prices go up. The 'No AC' campaign in cabs first started in Kolkata. Taxi drivers in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow followed suit. Hyderabad drivers have recently started this.
"Ola, Uber companies are not raising the base price. When we asked the Transport Department to implement the Aggregator Guidelines policy, the Minister and the officials did not respond. To whom should we tell our problems in such situations? It is not our intention to inconvenience passengers. We ask them to cooperate with us. We are providing AC facility to some with a humanitarian perspective," Sheikh Salahuddin, Founding President of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union said.
