Hyderabad
GHMC is not caring about the 99 libraries in the Greater area. It is only releasing Rs 15 lakh per month for maintenance of 82 libraries in Hyderabad district alone. Even those funds are not given to those within the Rangareddy and Medchal districts. Municipal officials charge an 8 percent cess annually from the people of the city in the name of libraries but do not spend on their development.
This makes it difficult for libraries to have the proper facilities for the readers. Already in Hyderabad district, a total of 8 libraries including AC Guards, Chanchalguda, branch libraries at Himayat Nagar, Murad Nagar, Valmiki Nagar, and three other mobile libraries have been closed due to lack of proper buildings or staff.
There are currently 82 libraries in operation. They do not have enough staff, books, and facilities. The situation is similar in libraries in Rangareddy and Medchal districts. With the state government currently releasing notifications, youngsters preparing for competitive exams are increasingly coming to libraries in the city. But there are no proper facilities or materials available here.
Ninty libraries in Hyderabad district, 11 out of 18 libraries in Medchal district, and 6 out of 25 libraries in Rangareddy district are under GHMC. Eight libraries in the Hyderabad district have been closed due to a lack of facilities. Of the 82, only 2 libraries have in-charges. Nine libraries in Ameerpet, Shahgunj, Baghlingampally, Sarf-e-Khas, Saidabad, PS Nagar, Gandhinagar, Amberpet, and Malkajgiri continue to be housed in rented buildings. The remaining have their own buildings but are in dilapidated condition. Broken chairs and tables are visible elsewhere. Not enough books and chairs are available. Although readers are asking for new ones, the authorities are not making them available. Some are limited to just newspapers. Organizers say there has been no response from GHMC authorities despite repeated letters to release library cess funds being collected from the public.
