The number of people who drive while talking on a cell phone is increasing day by day. The number of people being arrested by the police for driving under the influence of alcohol has not decreased at all. In this context, a study conducted by the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) and two other NGOs based in Hyderabad revealed key points.

In Hyderabad, 16.5 percent of two-wheelers are driving and talking on the phone, according to a study. Among them, 71.7 percent are driving without holding the phone in their hand. That means using earphones, Bluetooth, or talking while keeping a phone inside a helmet. More people are using cellphone driving on weekends (64.51%) than on weekends (35.49%). Among those talking phone while riding two-wheelers, 26.08% are on busy roads and 73.92% are on non-congested roads. This trend is more pronounced during non-peak hours (69.91%) compared to peak hours (30.09%).

As part of the study, vehicular traffic on Madhapur IT Corridor, Ameerpet, Medchal National Highway was videotaped and analyzed. An in-depth analysis is made to ascertain when motorists are using cell phones while driving on the respective roads. "Most motorists are driving in hands-free mode. The number of riders talking on the phone is high on weekends. Another important point is that cell phone driving seems to be more common during off-peak hours on non-busy roads. We found that the number of people driving while talking on the phone was one and a half percent higher on weekends compared to weekends. Researchers also say that laws needed to be amended to penalize those talking on mobile using hands-free devices as well.

Hyderabad traffic police say they are taking steps to control cellphone driving. Hyderabad Additional Commissioner of Traffic AV Ranganath said that 85,862 cellphone driving cases have been registered in the last three years. "If anyone is found speaking on the phone while driving,  cases would be registered against the drivers under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Of the 85,862 cases, fines were levied in about 68,900 cases, with 16,782 pending. In 2021, 36,566 cell phone driving cases were reported," he said.
