Looks like the traffic woes of Hyderabad citizens will reduce in the days to come. For better traffic management at junctions in the state capital, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has adopted new Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) systems that change traffic signal colors based on real-time traffic data.Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the state-of-the-art adaptive control algorithm known as Composite Signal Control Strategy (CoSiCoSt) adjusts the cycle time, green splits, and offsets to support coordinating with nearby intersections to manage area-wise traffic in real time.The ATSC systems will automatically and continuously adjust the green times based on the changing approaching patterns of vehicles at an intersection. The idea is to optimize a combination of delay and number of stops.The system will use camera-based detectors to constantly monitor movements at junctions, and it will create new timing sequences to match them. A centralized system will monitor the data of each junction and optimizes the system at a network level to ensure the synchronization of signals to reduce system delays.As of now, the ATSC and Pelican Signal System (PSS) projects consist of 122 ATSC signals, 94 pelican signals, and 213 existing HTRIMS signals across Hyderabad. The ATSC system will improve traffic flows along major corridors in the city through a combination of local and network-level optimization.The 94 Pelican signals equipped with a push button facility provide safe pedestrian crossing, and these signals have been installed at strategic locations such as hospitals, colleges/ schools, and commercial, public places where the pedestrian footfall is high.

It’s a common issue in a household that has children in their early teens or in their teenage years. Apparently, more than half of the youth are suffering from phubbing, which leads to psychological distress among them. Phubbing for the unversed is the practice of ignoring everyone around you as all attention is on the phone, according to a study.The study was carried out by Dr. Sudha Bala, asst prof at ESIC Hospital, Hyderabad, along with Dharani Tekkam and Harshal Pandve. It has been supported by ICMR. A total of 430 college-going students from engineering, medical and Unani colleges were part of the study.It was found that 52% of the city’s youth were phubbing, and 23% suffered severe psychological distress due to it, while it was moderate in 34%. Statistically, a correlation was found between the amount of phubbing and psychological distress.Incidentally, the word phubbing is a mix of two words – phone and snubbing – and was coined by an Australian advertising agency in 2012 as a part of a campaign and was later picked up worldwide. The study also found that youth who were into it lost their cool when confronted or questioned about it. This led to serious issues between parents and children, it was found.In one instance, when the mother took away the phone, the teenager, who was known to be cool, started showing signs of irritability and even aggression towards his mother. One psychologist from the city says they also educate the parents on giving family time and insist on them not using the gadgets unless it is quite important.

To address this issue, the state-run King Koti district hospital has begun using Entonox (a gas that is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen) during the process of delivering babies.The pregnant women suffering from severe labor pain will now have some relief, says the head of the gynecology department at the District Hospital, King Koti, Dr. Jalaja Veronica. She adds that it is first-of-its-kind equipment to be used in a government hospital.According to her, women can have some relief by breathing in a mixture of oxygen and laughing gas. Every contraction involves breathing in the gas, and depending on the patient’s pain threshold; the gases begin to work on the sensory nerves within 15-20 seconds and provide pain relief for one to two minutes. Instead of functioning as an anesthetic, it acts as an analgesic, she explains.At the time of labor, when the woman cannot bear the pain, an oxygen mask is given to her, which is connected to a cylinder of Entonox. When the patient exhales deeply, the gas goes into her body and helps her to reduce the pain.So far, it has been used on 13 women, and the government intends to use the formula in all government hospitals.

The state government has set two-, three- and four-wheeler speed limits on Greater roads. Cars will have a speed limit of 60 kmph on major roads while buses, autos, and bikes are required to travel at a speed of 50. Official notification to this effect was issued on Wednesday.All vehicles are advised to go at a speed of 30 kmph on the colony roads. Compared to the past, major roads, as well as internal roads, have improved throughout the Greater. BT, VDCC, and CC roads were constructed where necessary. So, the government has imposed speed limits to prevent accidents.The government has divided the speed limits into three categories based on reports from GHMC, police, and transport department officials. Officials said the speed limit has been ensured so that the motorist can reach the destination safely as there is a danger of speeding on better roads. According to these limits, Speed guns will be installed in many places and violators will be fined.
