Exporters and manufacturers of human hair in the country, in a shocking discovery, have come across a scam being run by certain Chinese nationals who are smuggling human hair to China from Hyderabad through Myanmar. The reports suggest that Hyderabad has become an epicenter of illegal hair exports to China. Chinese importers, here, file lower invoices for the product in order to shake off import duty on them in countries like Myanmar and China.
According to media reports, a complaint has been raised by the Indian traders regarding this issue with the Directorate of Revenue IntelligenceThe export business of human hair is a lucrative one in India which in 2016-17 was worth Rs 132 crore. Generally, human hair is bought from shrines and then processed to be exported to countries like China. Hair exporters, however, in the country face many challenges including under-invoicing from Chinese importers and illegal hair smuggling.
The Customs Department arrested two people in March this year, including one businessman from Kolkata in a bid to trap the hair importers of undervalued raw hair exports.
The Customs Department of Kolkata has also sent an alert to Hyderabad and other zones, warning authorities to be cautious of undervalued exports by “certain exporters who are artificially reducing the value of the consignments of human hair”.In China too, the smuggling of human hair is a common menace, where recently 10 hair smugglers were arrested and authorities seized worth $167 million human hair from them. Despite the pandemic, recent reports found that the trade of human hair in China is flourishing rapidly.
