Cyber Crime has been a menace in the city as it continues to expand its reach, attack innocent people with elementary schemes, and siphoned money in large amounts. The Cyber police have been trying to get hold of these con men, but by the time the victim files a report, it gets too late, or the fraud has fled the city unless there is a possibility of tracing his whereabouts.
The recent case of getting duped involves an engineering student who was tricked into buying furniture from a popular e-commerce site and was cheated of Rs. 70,000/-. A youngster from Amberpet recently posted an advertisement selling a sofa set online, and within few hours of this posting, he got a call from the victim stating interest in buying the sofa.
After discussing the details of payment, delivery, and specifically about the sofa, the seller sent a QR code to the victim's mobile and asked him to scan it as part of the payment procedure. Within few minutes of the victim scanning it, close to Rs.70,000/- was debited from his account. The victim approached the police, explained the entire timeline of events, and is awaiting something positive as the police investigate this matter.
