While it is understandable that celebrities extend their support to social issues, doing the same without following the necessary guidelines can land them in trouble. So is the case now wherein about 30 celebrities have been listed for divulging the name of the rape victim in the ‘Disha case’.
The celebrities had taken to social media to condemn the barbarous act wherein a young veterinary doctor was brutally raped, killed, and burnt to do away with all evidence. The inhuman incident happened on November 18, 2019, in Hyderabad. It created a furor across the country and huge demonstrations were held demanding the arrest of the accused. Later, the four accused were killed in a police encounter when they tried to escape police.
At the time, various celebrities commented on social media without realizing that they were giving away the name of the victim. While people like Salman Khan took the victim’s name, Anupam Kher also tagged union home minister Amit Shah and demanded a death sentence for the accused.
A Delhi-based lawyer Gautham Gulati filed a case against these celebrities demanding their arrest for taking the victim’s real name. A case has been filed at Sabzi Mandi police station in Delhi under IPC section 228A.
A petition was also filed by him at Tees Hazari Court for being insensitive and revealing the name despite legal restrictions on revealing the name of the victim in a rape case. The celebrities named in the petition include Bollywood big names such as Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Anupam Kher, Rakul Preet Singh, Farhan Akhtar, Salman Khan, and Tollywood actors such as Allu Sirish, Ravi Teja, Charmme Kaur among others.
