Given the increasing number of road accidents due to drunk driving, the city traffic police have started strictly acting against drunk drivers and are being booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder as per section 304 part II of the Indian Penal Code, which could result in the imprisonment of up to 10 years.
According to the Hyderabad traffic police, more than 500 persons were caught for drunk driving during regular vehicle checking in the third week of September at different places across the Cyberabad Commissionerate. All those offenders were produced before the court, and a total fine of around Rs 15 lakh on the drunk driving rule violators and Rs 5 lakh on those without a driving license were imposed.
According to the officials, the driving licenses of all the violators caught drunk were sent to the Regional Transport Authority concerned for suspension of the license.
A senior official from Cyberabad Traffic Wing said that Drunk driving and driving by unauthorized persons had been the major reasons for road mishaps and fatal accidents. The persons who knowingly accompanied or allowed the drunk drivers were also being prosecuted for abetting the violations. The Cyberabad Police were also directing the organizations or institutions where the persons involved in accidents work and are requesting them to conduct road safety education to their staff.
