According to city police, the man arrested over rape threats to cricketer Virat Kohli's nine-month-old daughter Vamika turned out to be an IIT graduate from Hyderabad with a history of online trolling using multiple identities.23-year-old Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini is a software engineer who previously worked with a prominent food delivery app in Bengaluru. Reportedly, he quit the job to prepare for a master's degree in the US.
Ramnagesh is currently in Mumbai prison after his arrest in Hyderabad on Wednesday. If things were normal, he would have headed to a US university in a few days.
According to a Hyderabad police officer, Ramnagesh Akubathini's father and a friend have accompanied him to Mumbai.
Ramnagesh had scored 2367 in the IIT-JEE and also has a younger brother. His family belongs to the upper-middle class and claims that they did not know of his trolling activities.
They informed the police that he was passionate about cricket, and after India's dismal defeat in the T20 World Cup matches, first to Pakistan and then to New Zealand, he was pretty upset. His family feels that he might have posted the rape threat "accidentally."When the screenshot of the rape threat tweet went viral, Ramnagesh changed his Twitter handle (@ramanheist) and pretended to be a Pakistani user @criccrazyygirl. But in no time, his handle was tracked down by fact-check websites. He also used another handle, @pellikuturuhere, which indicated that the Twitter handle belonged to someone who belongs to a Telugu state.
Virat Kohli was also attacked after he spoke his heart out against the incessant trolling of his teammate, Mohammed Shami, over his religion, after the loss to Pakistan.
Kohli said that they are playing on the field; they are not a bunch of spineless people on social media. He added that these kinds of trolling have become a source of entertainment for some people, which is very sad.
