There are various ways in which a student can learn their subjects. When one is younger, subjects are taught using drawings and songs, music and dance are used in kindergarten to teach young minds. Now, the education department is promoting the concept of using dance and music to teach various subjects.
While it sounds interesting on the face of it, it is sprinkled with various hurdles say the teachers. Teachers are trained in dance and music at the BEd level, but they stick to their subject and do not get involved in overall teaching. While many teachers agree that the intention of the education department is indeed laudable, they are still unable to figure out a way to implement the department’s instructions.
Some teachers shared that top schools in the city held meetings with teachers to check if the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary style of teaching can work. One faculty from the Government Music College, Koti, said that there were some methods in which mathematics could be taught through music and dance. Apparently, Carnatic music, Hindustani music, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi dance forms had the possibilities of such experimentation.
Though the Britishers are long gone, we still follow the education system they left behind. However, in an effort to encourage students, interdisciplinary courses have been included at various degree level and postgraduate level colleges. But the faculty maintains that it will take time before such courses take off.
