Banjara Hills corporator Vijayalaxmi R Gadwal of the TRS party is the new mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). BJP has put up RK Puram corporator Radha Reddy as the competitor and Vijayalaxmi defeated her comfortably as MIM also supported the TRS nominee. Vijayalaxmi is the daughter of TRS Senior Leader and Rajya Sabha MP, K Keshava Rao.
Tarnaka Corporator M Srilatha Reddy of TRS has been elected as the Deputy Mayor after she defeated BJP’s Shankar Yadav. That leaves us with two women steering Hyderabad for the first time in history.
BJP put up candidate despite having no numbers in the council to prove the friendship of TRS and MIM. TRS did not mind that and took MIM support to have its corporators as Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Earlier, the newly elected corporators took the oath.
“I feel very proud. I thank KCR and KTR for choosing two women. There are many things I want to concentrate on. As a woman, I promise complete safety for women in Hyderabad. Be it roads, drainage etc many issues which will be addressed soon. I have a vision,” Vijayalaxmi said after being elected.
