During this dreadful pandemic, we have heard many stories about people distributing food, groceries, donating money, and cooking for the needy. But here's a man from Tolichowki who is giving back to society with his out-of-the-box initiative. Mohammed Iqbal, now known as the breadman, runs Abdullah Naan Mahal in Tolichowki, and he does not want anyone to go home hungry. So, he came up with an initiative called Neki ki Roti which means Bread of Goodness.
He places a basket outside his shop every morning for people to buy rotis, naan and put them in it for the needy. Iqbal himself donates at least 20 naans in the basket every day. He says that even those who are not his regular customers are now buying Neki ki Rotis to help the starved ones. Iqbal, too, like many others, is bearing the brunt of lockdown, but he has plans to start making Nahari Sherwa (curry for the rotis) once the lockdown is over and he becomes a bit stable financially.
Abdullah Naan Mahal used to serve Nahari Sherwa too in 2020 but had to stop because of pandemic-imposed lockdown. Iqbal, however, is hopeful that this difficult phase will also pass and the world becomes a better place again. Iqbal says that many ride down to his eatery to take these free rotis. No one asks them any questions because it is understandable that the homeless and needy are starving due to the lockdown.
We can only say, this society needs many more Mohamed Iqbals.
