Various groups are trying to promote cycling in Hyderabad, and one such group happens to be Happy Hyderabad which has initiated Project Diya to collect, repair, and donate old cycles to the needy. They feel this would lessen the congestion on the roads while helping those who are in need of a mode of transportation. There was a time when almost every family had a cycle, but today most families do not own one thanks to the growing number of cars and motorcycles. This has resulted in pollution, traffic congestion which has become harrowing for the city-dwellers.
So, many educated in big cities are reverting to cycling to do their bit for the environment. Also, not only are they affordable, but they are also a great means of exercise. And it is with this objective, Project Diya has been started so that old cycles from families are collected, repaired,, and donated to those who cannot afford any vehicle.
Happy Hyderabad is a cycling group that has been advocating the cause of taking up cycling for a long time now. They feel with rising fuel prices and environmental reasons; cycling is a good option for commuting within the city.
However, Project Diya has been inspired by a similar initiative in Pune and has so far collected 30 odd cycles from various people around the city. Another 50 are in the process of giving their cycles. While they could have tied up with corporate to make their task easier, those behind Project Diya chose to work with roadside repair shop workers to help them provide a means of resources.
Project Diya members share that they received about 40-50 calls from security guards, maids, and students. They say their volunteers based around the city will check the details, and then the cycles would be given away.
