According to the reports, the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) will audit the condition of old bridges in Hyderabad. GHMC will conduct inspections to check structural stability, carry out load capacity tests, and prepare a detailed report.
The decade-old bridges include the Road over Bridges (RoBs) in Ramakrishnapuram, Begumpet, Aravind Nagar, Moula Ali, and other bridges in the Secunderabad Zone of GHMC. Consultants will be engaged to conduct the health audit study of the bridges.
The reports would mention the extent of damage in any bridges and repair recommendations. The consulting agencies will utilize different technologies to detect the damages and faults in the structures. Preliminary inspections by civic engineers have revealed certain doubts over the structural condition of these old bridges, with corrosion and cracks found in many of them.
The reports suggest that Hyderabad's major existing road network system is faced with numerous problems such as inadequate carriageway, improper drainage facilities, the width of railway crossings and pedestrian footpaths, traffic management, and the lack of an efficient mass transport system, among others. This has resulted in the rise of pressure on the existing road network so that the city is ready to adjust to future traffic demands.
The GHMC will utilize the consultancy services for investigation, non-destructive testing, rehabilitation methodologies for the four bridges in Secunderabad Zone. The main aim is to conduct non-destructive testing for obtaining immediate restoration measures to the bridge, i.e., damaged expansion joints, distressed bearing regions, and voids in the girders. This can be done by understanding the extent and intensity of distress and then arriving at necessary and suitable estimate quantities and restoration methodologies in the next three months.
