Well, do not expect a posh restaurant and high-end clientele. Here, at Aqsa biryani stall in Afzalgunj, a plate of vegetable biryani comes for a measly price of Rs 10. And don’t go by the price. It is something that Iftekar Momin from Talab Katta started around 10 years ago for the sake of the toiling people and labourers in the area. However, now his biryani stall is popular with people from all walks of life, but Iftekar’s objective was to feed the needy at the lowest possible price.
For Rs 10, one would expect rice and a couple of vegetables. But that is not the case. His biryani is filled with vegetables like green peas, carrots, potatoes, fenugreek leaves, and tomatoes. One can also get packets of half a kilo for Rs 30 and 1 kilo for Rs 60. After starting with one stall when he started selling biryani for Rs 5, Iftekar now has four such stalls, one each in Osmania General Hospital, Koti Women’s College Bus Stop, GPO Abids bus stop, and near Secunderabad Railway station.
The biryani place opens at 7 am and is open till midnight. There is barely any profit motive and Iftekar gets a margin of Rs 1 for all his effort. They serve 1500 plates of biryani in a day and say the whole idea is to provide affordable food for the downtrodden.
