Dr Bharat Reddy is well-known to all cine-lovers in Telugu-speaking states, a cardiologist by profession, an actor by vocation. He is often seen as a friend or a police officer in films. However, now he has donned yet another role as a restaurant owner. What sets his restaurant Millet Marvels apart is that it is totally dedicated to millets, as the name suggests. Bharat Reddy being a cardiologist, noticed that about 70% of his patients had diabetes. That was when he realised the need to educate people about consuming millets at least five times a week.
He says that the food that we take these days is, in fact, more dangerous than corona. He adds that corona gives out symptoms so that one can seek help. But the kind of foods we consume these days give out symptoms only when the system is completely down, says he. His Millet Marvels is one of its kind restaurant and takeaway place where millets are used to prepare a variety of foods, including snacks and meals. Bharat Reddy says the idea is to slowly wean away people from unhealthy foods and help them transition to eating healthy millets. Today, his restaurant uses six varieties of millets. While five are local varieties, one happens to be quinoa.
Indian Institute of Millets Research Centre and his sister played an important role in his taking the decision of setting up a restaurant to show people how millets can be cooked in various ways. He says eating millets can be interesting and healthy at the same time. His restaurant serves everything from snacks to full meals. The restaurant is located in Film Nagar and has a good footfall. Bharat Reddy intends to extend the chain to all states in the country. Initially, he would charge only if the customers liked his food. Slowly and steadily, he built a dedicated customer base.
He says millets need to be soaked at least 8-10 hours before being used. While millets are best, shares Bharat Reddy. Indian government declared 2018 as millets year. Since then, Bharat Reddy has been doing his bit to increase awareness among people.
In future, Bharat Reddy is in the process of setting up a millet processing unit on the outskirts of the city, and he also intends to introduce millet noodles. Yummy!!
