There wouldn’t be anyone in Hyderabad who loves food and is not aware of Ram ki Bandi in Nampally. While the bandi was popular from the beginning, its popularity soared once the food bloggers of Hyderabad wrote about it. But what’s interesting is that Ram ki Bandi is now run by Ram Kumar Shinde, who is an MBA graduate.
Ram ki Bandi was started in 1989 by Ram’s father, Lakshman Rao Shinde. He used to take his 8-year-old son along with him daily, and that’s how Ram’s association with his father’s business grew over the years. His father would park at various locations and sell idlis and dosas, and Ram would learn from him with complete fascination.
The father and son would set up their stall at 3 AM in the morning, and they would serve the office-going lot till around 8 AM. Despite financial hardships, Lakshman Rao saved enough to get his son to study MBA. Forty-year-old Ram was in a dilemma whether to take up a job that gave him Rs 20,000 in an AC office or take up his father’s bandi.
Ram chose to take over his father’s business in 2011. Today, his name is associated with the food map of Hyderabad city. No mention of dosas goes without taking the name of Ram ki Bandi. Ram serves a huge variety of dosas but is famous for his pizza dosas. In fact, customers come in BMWs and Audis to eat his dosas. While the basic dosa costs Rs 50, other varieties cost Rs 100. But his pizza dosas cost Rs 150.
In 2015, Ram started a restaurant called Ram’s Dosa House in Jubilee Hills near KBR Park and got a great response. Today his joint is visited by VIPs and Telugu actors from the locality.
