Hyderabad
Ravita Mayor, a city-based fashion designer, has worked hard on a unique and rare wedding collection for almost a year. Ravita is known in Hyderabad's posh circles for conducting dramatic shows, fashion shows in London, and some of the choicest hotels in the city. She calls her latest work The Kanasu Collection.
Ravita also works with the state government to promote Telangana's thriving handloom sector. She says that Kanasu is a wedding collection for the Dulhan (bride) and the entire family. It's mostly lehengas with some intricate handwork on them. She wanted her designs to tell the story of romance, love, and elegance. Ravita's specialization is fusion Indo-Western wear, but she has also gone traditional with the roughly 60 ensembles of Kanasu. She has used dreamy pastels in trend these days and attempts to bring back the regal blues and bold reds. Ravita explains that Kanasu is a Kannada word, which means dream. She draws inspiration from Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Ravita's home in Banjara Hills boasts of some fantastic works of the self-taught painter.
Ravita, too, is self-taught when it comes to fashion, just like her role model. She comes from a Zamindar family in Assam. When she was young, she spent a lot of time watching the weavers near her house making traditional Assamese towels (gamchas).
