Shilpa Reddy is a name that many in Hyderabad associate with fashion. Of course, apart from being good buddies with Nagarjuna. The Toronto graduate of fashion has been in the fashion industry for a couple of decades and has draped celebrities from Bollywood and Tollywood over the years. Of late, she has been in the news for her holiday trips with Samantha post her break-up and her much-appreciated show on YouTube, which is all about sustainability and ethical living.
The tall and lanky lady has surely come a long way from modeling to designing clothes for the biggies. Of course, it was not her bread and butter, but she had the passion and the drive. But her stint with fashion also made her realize that the fashion industry was one of the most polluted industries in the world, and she has been waiting for the right ‘time’ to exit the ultra-glam world.
Well, the world was itself adapting to sustainability, and the dialogue became more vocal during the pandemic. That’s when Shilpa Reddy spoke to her family about her decision and eventually shut shop once and for all.
Meanwhile, she started her talk show that centered around all things ethical, clean, and, most importantly, natural. She confesses it was hard learning. She lost a lot of clients when she tried to convert her design studio into a space for sustainable clothing. Shilpa says handlooms come at a price and her clients were not willing to pay an extra penny. But eventually, Shilpa took the big step and started her website called SustainKart. That apart, Shilpa also started her school Ekam as she realized she enjoyed educating or teaching children. As for her site, one can find all things naturally sourced, and it’s a space Shilpa wants to provide for little-known craftspeople and upcoming ones. She says there are many celebs wanting to invest in the site and is happy she got on to her chosen path.
