Stand-up comedy is what kept many going during the pandemic, and one comedian who increased his reach and kept his audiences in good spirits was city-based Saikiran. For a stand-up comedian, Saikiran is shy, but that does not stop him from leaving his audience in splits during his shows.
But Saikiran is one guy who was pretty sure of what he wanted to do. His entry into stand-up comedy was not accidental but by choice. He says he grew up watching Jay Leno, Seinfeld, etc., on TV. He says his avenues increased once YouTube and broadband came to India. Saikiran says he enjoyed watching all the great comics of the world very easily.
Saikiran wanted to do stand-up, but gigs were happening in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. But his chance came when comedian Rajasekhar Mamidanna organized the very first open mic contest in Hyderabad. And as they say, Saikiran won it, and he hasn’t looked back since then.
Now, he is all set to launch his new show, ‘Pure Veg Jokes’ at Aaromale, Film Nagar Road Number 12, on Sunday, February 13. He shares that he toured all over India before the pandemic and was supposed to record and release the show before moving on to his next show, Nearly Nice Guy. But pandemic was the spoke in his story. But now, he is all set to tour again, beginning with Hyderabad before he records the show and releases it.
And for those interested, Pure Veg Jokes is about his childhood, growing up in a middle-class, conservative south Indian family with an older sibling. But Saikiran also wants to popularise Telugu stand-up comedy since 2015. He launched his Telugu show Navvi Poduru Gaaka in Hyderabad in 2019 and had even toured for it across other south Indian cities. He says his task has become easier as he can now record Telugu stand-up comedy in Hyderabad, unlike in the past when they had to do it in Mumbai.
Despite YouTube, Zoom, Instagram... Saikiran says nothing beats a live comedy show. In the coming future, Saikiran wants to release more stand-up videos and long-form sit-down comedy videos on YouTube and, of course, do live shows.
