Open social media, and it goes without saying, one gets to see one’s daily dose of memes on various topical issues. In fact, memes have taken over social media by storm. While they provide a daily dose of humor, these images also take a funny view of the events happening around the world. Well, just like pictures, memes speak a thousand words in today’s world. Some are tunes, some are ideas, and some are catchphrases and witty posts.
But did you ever wonder how and where these memes come from before they go viral? Meet BTech graduates Arun and Anand, who launched Fukkard in 2014. Though both of them want to be filmmakers, they are willing to wait till they are ready by making memes meanwhile. They say story-telling is never a hindrance, and they just needed a platform. Their stories are simple – they could be daily events, workplace happenings, or inane things like untangling an earphone cord. The duo eventually deep-dived into cinema, politics, and cricket. And that’s when their popularity grew exponentially.
With examples like All India Bakchod, Arun and Anand decided to go for innovative content for the Telugu audience. They say that’s it’s important for meme-makers to have a feel of the pulse of the consumers along with having sound knowledge of current events, politics, sports, and entertainment. Basically, they have to know what will create a buzz on social media.
Usually, meme creators stick to one genre, but Fukkard touches upon all genres. Initially, a few tools apps that helped with photo collage, texts, and fonts came in handy along with the comic expressions of Brahmanandam. Within eight months, people started following Fukkard. Posts on IPL fixtures tennis matches with Roger Federer increased their fan base tremendously.
Right now, Fukkard has 562k followers on Instagram and 139k followers on Twitter, which Arun shares are most for any Telugu meme page. Even as they dream to make films someday, for now, their meme show is fetching them enough money to survive in a cosmopolitan city.
